The Yemeni government has pledged to provide additional investment incentives and facilities to pharmaceutical importers willing to localize drug manufacturing in the country. It also commended the existing and under-construction national pharmaceutical factories. This announcement was made during a Ramadan evening event organized by the Union of Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies Importers in collaboration with the General Investment Authority and the Supreme Authority for Medicines and Pharmacy, attended by high-ranking government officials.

During the event, First Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Muftah emphasized the importance of a gradual transition from drug imports to local production. He called for joint efforts among various stakeholders to serve the country's best interests and praised the efforts of the Ministers of Economy and Health in addressing the challenges facing the pharmaceutical sector while ensuring the rights of all parties involved.

Minister of Economy, Industry, and Investment, Eng. Moeen Hashem Al-Mahaqeri, highlighted the government's ambitious plans for transitioning to local pharmaceutical production, stressing the need for private sector cooperation to ensure its success. He reassured importers that the transition process would be smooth and structured to protect national capital and achieve public benefit.

Al-Mahaqeri also pointed out the incentives and advantages offered by the new Investment Law to local manufacturers and producers, including protections against market saturation from imported products. He affirmed the government's commitment to supporting traders and pharmaceutical importers throughout this transition by enforcing the Investment Law, which aims to achieve self-sufficiency in food, medicine, and clothing.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health and Environment Dr. Ali Sheban underscored the need to regulate the pharmaceutical sector and establish a sustainable medical stockpile to enhance national drug security. He explained that the new Drug and Pharmacy Law is built on transparency principles and aims to develop this vital sector. He stressed the importance of government-private sector collaboration in implementing the law and creating a comprehensive database on drug stock levels to support effective decision-making.

At the end of the event, an open discussion was held, where officials listened to feedback and suggestions from pharmaceutical traders and importers. The discussions reaffirmed the importance of eliminating obstacles to pharmaceutical industry localization and providing the necessary facilities to local investors, contributing to the sustainable development of Yemen’s healthcare sector.
